Operations
Griffiss Utility Services Corporation (GUSC)
distributes steam heat to the Griffiss Business and Technology Park
tenants. Currently, electricity is purchased from multiple sources and
distributed to park tenants. GUSC receives a ReCharge New York allocation of
low-cost electric power from the New York Power Authority (NYPA); this
allocation expires October 2019.
Any energy needs in excess of the NYPA allocation are procured
through market purchases in the wholesale electricity markets
administered and monitored by the New York Independent System Operator
(NYISO), the operator of New York’s bulk electricity grid. GUSC also owns energy generation and distribution assets located within the Griffiss Business and Technology Park. This includes a 26-mile steam distribution system, two substations with 70 MW of combined capacity, and the associated electrical distribution system. Historically, the utility has delivered approximately 250 million pounds of steam per year and over 80 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. GUSC also purchases and distributes energy generated by GUSC Energy’s new biomass energy facility. More details on the GUSC Energy project can be found on the GUSC Energy website. |
